Kochi: The social auditing of Roshni project initiated by the Ernakulam district administration to provide educational and social uplift to the children of migrant labourers, has begun on Monday. Teachers, parents, cultural leaders and academic experts will evaluate the progress of the project.

As part of social auditing, language skills of students of migrant labourers at Binanipuram Government High School has been evaluated and declared them as Malayalam literate. The 39 migrant students in the LP and UP sections of the school can now write and read Malayalam.

Writer Sethu, the chief guest of the programme, announced the students from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Northeastern states as Malayalam-literate. The chief guest, PTA members and local body representatives evaluated the language skills of the students.

Addressing the gathering, Sethu complimented the efforts of the district administration to integrate the migrant workers' children with Kerala society.

"It is a novel effort to familiarize them with Kerala culture and language. Students at different ages from different cultures can now write and read Malayalam. The artistic talents of students are also being encouraged. The project has got a good start and can be replicated," he said.

The initiative will be extended to the 20 schools in the district where Roshni is being implemented.

Roshni has earlier won the prestigious Skoch award for implementing the project. The project, initiated with the financial support of BPCL Limited, aims at integration of migrant children to Kerala society and to ensure their better future.
