Hyderabad: Open garbage most likely to catch fire

Last year, during Diwali time, about 43 cases related to crackers were reported, of which 38 occurred in GHMC limits.

Hyderabad: Open garbage can cause fires that damage public property and most such fires are reported during the Diwali season, when fire crackers can ignite the garbage. Fire department statistics show that 284 such incidents took place across the state during Diwali last year (November 2015), of which 51 were reported in GHMC limits and Rangareddy district.

Nizamabad registered the highest number of such incidents (70), followed by Karimnagar (54) and Nalgonda (33). Recently, such fires in the city damaged transformers and electric cables.

On October 19, a fire accident at open garbage at Asif Nagar oil mill damaged an electric transformer. Electrical cables at Seetharambagh near Sai Baba temple, Vijaynagar Colony, Owaisi Park in Vijaynagar Colony and near Gudimalkapur market were damaged last week.

Rangareddy, Adilabad and Nalgonda fire officials took precautions last year and succeeded in creating awareness among public on the possibilities of fire accidents while dealing with firecrackers. Thus, there were zero incidents registered in those areas.
