Civilians have a go at Army's weapons

Apart from tanks and rifles, the Army also displayed indigenous surveillance radar used in warfare to identify targets.

Hyderabad: A Russian rifle gun manufactured in 1940 and used by the Indian Army in wars — the last one being in Kargil in 1999 — was the oldest weapon among a plethora of other weapons on display by the Army at Parade Grounds on Saturday.

Also on display were the Russian made Tank 72 — specially designed for agility in the desert, weighing 45 tonnes, a medium machine gun (fixed on an Army jeep and designed to be used as an anti-aircraft gun) and an anti-tank guided missile.

Apart from tanks and rifles, the Army also displayed indigenous surveillance radar used in warfare to identify targets.

The Armed Forces observed ‘Parakram Parv’ on 29 September 29 to mark the second anniversary of the surgical strikes against terror camps across the Line of Control (LoC).

The display attracted many civilians. “It is a rare occasion, where civilians get to learn of the weaponry used by our Army in warfare,” said an onlooker.

Meanwhile, DRDO chairman Dr G. Satheesh Reddy inaugurated a manufacturing facility of man portable anti-tank guided missiles (MP ATGM) at BDL, Bhanur unit (Patancheru) on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Reddy traced the various missile programs on anvil. Referring to his long association with BDL, he predicted a very bright future for the company and stated that BDL has a highly dedicated workforce.
