Chennai: Fisherman tossed out of boat by high tide, dies

The deceased was part of a group of five fishermen who were tossed into the river mouth near the harbour.

NAGAPATTINAM: A 28-year-old fisherman was found dead near a stone groyne near the Nagapattinam habour in the wee hours of Thursday, police said. The deceased was part of a group of five fishermen who were tossed into the river mouth near the harbour here by high tides from their fishing vessel.

Police said the victim K Sasikumar hailing from Keechankuppam fishing hamlet in Nagapattinam district, had ventured into the sea alo ng with four others, P Kalaimani,R Soundarrajan, Kunju Babu from Akkarapettai fishermen hamlet and V Anand from Keechankuppam in a fiber reinforced plastic (FRB) boat.

When they were returning to the shore, the sudden high tides in the estuary of Kaduv aiyaru close to Nagapattinam fishing harbour slashed the boat and threw its occupants into the water, police said.

While four of them managed to clamber into the boat, Sasikumar was found missing. On their inf ormation, more than 10 fishing vessels and two patrol boats of Marine police went on a search mission and recovered the deceased body that was found stuck between the roc ks of South Kaduvaiyaru groyne, police added.
