Hyderabad: B.Tech and M.Tech seats to fall under 1 lakh

The number of BE/B.Tech seats is sure to fall below the 1-lakh mark, a college representative said.

Hyderabad: The number of B.Tech and M.Tech seats in private engineering colleges in Telangana is likely to come down considerably with the JNTU-Hyderabad adopting a stringent stand to disaffiliate colleges or courses if they fail to fulfill the required guidelines.

For the first time after many years, the number of BE/B.Tech seats is sure to fall below the 1-lakh mark, a college representative said.

“Every year the number of seats used to be more than the number of candidates who qualify in Eamcet, but this year the situation will be different. Around 1.03 lakh students have qualified. The seats available would be between 80,000 and 90,000 this time,” he told this newspaper.

This situation of qualified candidates outnumbering available seats is a first after nearly seven to eight years. Many engineering colleges are likely to lose the opportunity of offering post-graduate engineering courses this academic year.

“JNTU officials are insisting on faculty with double PhDs to teach M.Tech students, which was not the case till the last academic year. A majority of the engineering colleges do not have lecturers or professors fulfilling this norm. Hence there is a good chance of M.Tech courses being removed from many colleges this academic year,” a member of the private colleges association said.
