Chennai Corporation commissioner to appear before HC today

The Commissioner could not come to the court as he was out of station and he will ask him to appear before the court on November 29.

Chennai: The Madras high court was informed that the Commissioner of Chennai Corporation was not able to be present in the court as per the earlier directive since he was not in station. A division bench comprising Justices Vineet Kothari and Anita Sumanth had on November 27 directed the Commissioner of Chennai Corporation to remain present in the court on Wednesday and show cause as to why action has not been taken against the illegally constructed multi-storey building at Vadapalani, where fire accident took place and four persons died last year.

When the case came up for hearing on Wednesday, additional advocate general S.R. Rajagopal informed the Bench that Subath Kumar, regional deputy commissioner is present in the court. The Commissioner could not come to the court as he was out of station and he will ask him to appear before the court on November 29.

The bench posted to November 29, further hearing of the public interest litigation filed by social activist Traffic Ramaswamy, which sought a direction to the authorities to take action against the officials responsible for the illegal construction of a multi-storey building at Vadapalani.

The bench had directed the Commissioner of Chennai Corporation to be present in the court on November 28 and answer as to whether the enquiry against the officials is completed or not, if completed what action was taken against them, whether the portions where violations took place are demolished or not and if not, assign reasons for the same and whether compensation has been paid to the families of the deceased.
