Science Congress for kids from today

340 teams from 34 educational dists to make presentations at event.

Mysuru: Even before Mysureans could put pleasant memories of the 83rd Akhila Bharatha Kannada Sahithya Sammelana behind them, the City of Palaces is all set to host another major event.

As many as 1700 young scientists (680 juniors in the 10 to 14 age group and 1020 seniors in the 14 to 17 age bracket) including 850 from rural areas from across the state will converge at Mysuru for the 25th National Children's Science Congress which will be held for three days from Wednesday, at Vignana Bhavan at Karnataka State Open University(KSOU) campus, in Mysuru.

Ten teams including five from rural areas (two teams of juniors comprising students between 10 and 14 years and three teams of seniors comprising those aged 14 to 17 years) and five from urban areas from each educational district- that is a total 340 teams from 34 educational districts of the state will make presentations on the theme of the Congress, "Science Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development", at four different halls of Vignana Bhavan at KSOU.

They will also exhibit their posters. The best student would be honoured with the State Balavignani award by Karnataka State Vignana Parishat which is hosting the event.

As many as 30 teams selected at the conference will be sent to the three-day National Science Conference which will be held at Ahmedabad in Gujarat from December 27.

17-year-old Muhammed Suhail C.S. from Srirangpatna who had won the State Balvignani award at the 2013 state level National Science Congress, is all set to make a presentation of his research paper on ‘An economical early detection and dosage monitoring tool for protein efficiency malnutrition,’ in the USA. On the occasion of the silver jubilee celebration, 24 students including Suhail who had won Bala Vignani awards, would be honoured during the Science Congress.

Also during the Science Congress, 50 students will demonstrate their science projects in an exhibition.

At the Senate Bhavan of University of Mysuru, Dr B.R. Guruprasad of ISRO will give a demo on rocket launches, Dr Vinod J Lakkappan will give a lecture on forensic science, Snake Shyam of Mysuru will speak on Snakes, Mr M R Dasegowda will give a demo on simple experiments of physics, Dr Hulikal Nataraj will give a demo on breaking the myth of miracles.

Mysuru is hosting the conference for the fourth time. The last one was held in 2010, according to Parishat sources.
