Haryana government to replicate Telangana's 'Household Survey'

Sharma briefed the visitors about the Intensive Household Survey conducted by the TS government.

Hyderabad: Impressed by the Telangana state government’s Intensive Household Survey, the Haryana government has decided to carry out a similar exercise in that state.

A nine-member delegation from Haryana, headed by Chief Secretary D.S. Dhesi and secretaries of IT and Revenue departments, along with officials from the Chief Minister’s Office, met TS Chief Secretary Rajeev Sharma and principal planning secretary B.P. Acharya here on Monday.

Mr Sharma briefed the visitors about the Intensive Household Survey conducted by the TS government.

Mr Acharya gave a PowerPoint presentation to the Haryana delegation and said that compared to other surveys taken up so far, the IHS was unique and most comprehensive.

Briefing the differences among Census, National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) survey and IHS, Mr Acharya said the Census is aimed at collecting information about every member of the population. The NSSO survey collects information from sample households on select subjects while the TS government, through the IHS, collected information from all members of each household in the state.

He said the Census is taken every 10 years, NSSO survey can be conducted more frequently but the IHS was conducted only once, to zero in on the most-vulnerable among the population of the state so that they could be extended the benefits of welfare schemes.

Mr Acharya said that the Census is more detailed and accurate, NSSO survey results are estimates based on sample data while the IHS was the most reliable as every member of each household is spoken to and data collected.

He said that despite this being such a massive exercise, IHS was completed in just one day, while Census and NSSO surveys take a long time.

Mr Acharya informed the visitors from Haryana that the Telangana state government has set a national record and gained entry into the Limca Book of Records for completing the IHS in just one day.
