Uppal's BJP MLA stops demolition team

The GHMC said due to encroachments, the road was severely damaged during the recent rains.

HYDERABAD: BJP’s MLA from Uppal, N.V.S.S. Prabhakar on Wednesday stopped demolition of alleged illegal houses on Kapra to Nagaram nala.

The GHMC said due to encroachments, the road was severely damaged during the recent rains. The civic body had started demolitions at Sonia Gandhi Nagar, Marutinagar, Gandhinagar, Ganeshnagar and Cutting Colony of the Kapra area, that fall under the MLA’s jurisdiction.

Kapra assistant city planner Santosh Kumar said, “When we went to Sonia Gandhi Nagar to demolish buildings, the MLA raised objections on its design. We haven’t stopped the demolition work totally, we will proceed with it further tomorrow after clarity on layout design.” Defending his move, the MLA said the GHMC had left Modi Builders’ apartment and Lake Villas along the nala intact, but had demolished houses “belonging to the poor”. The MLA said the nala is 70-feet wide, which according to him, is enough. Stating that he himself is an engineer, he said he would give alternative designs that won’t need any demolition.

“The nala is already 60 to 70-ft wide and 6-feet deep where the officials have taken up demolition. The nala near Kapra lake is not even 20-ft wide and it has been encroached by many builders. But there is no dismantling.

“The weaker sections of the society live here. Moreover, they (the GHMC) have to mark 15 ft on both sides but they marked 30 ft on one side. There is no permanent nala here, it is only a kaccha nala. When there is no cement-constructed nala, where is the question of encroachment? All these houses were regularised last year with GO 58 by the KCR government and the government handed over pattas to them through me. Why are they taking a U-turn and demolishing these houses?” he asked.
