Brahmins' body to help victims in Anantapur

Says welfare corporation to provide with legal counsel.

Anantapur: The Brahmins Welfare Corporation will provide all the support needed to help victims of land grabbing, said its chairman I.Y.R. Krishna Rao.
He was referring to the rising number of such offences involving Brahmins when speaking at a public meeting held here on Sunday about welfare schemes being implemented for them.

He said that the corporation would help with legal counsel and a retired revenue official in cases where people were genuinely facing threats from those who were able to produce fake documentation to fortify their fraudulent claims to land that Brahmins owned.

Mr Rao also called on people to mount pressure on the state government to implement its election promise of giving a monthly honorarium of at least Rs 5,000 to temple priests whose job involved serving devotees through the day.

He said that the State Bank of India and Andhra Bank had also agreed to provide financial assistance for students, entrepreneurs and the aged through various schemes. “With the SBI getting involved, a larger number of beneficiaries can avail of these services,” Mr. Rao said.

The corporation plans to encourage Vedic teaching for students besides their regular academic courses. Mr Rao had earlier inspected a private Brahmins' hostel on 3rd Road where the authorities were conducting Vedic courses every evening.

Former Director General of Police Aravinda Rao said that such cultural heritage should be protected for the benefit of the future generations.
State association president J. Sreekanth and former municipal chairman B.S. Vidyasagar participated in the meeting.
