Nellore/Ongole: Mild tremors shook several villages six times between 8.45 am and 12.40 pm in Udayagiri, Vinjamuru, Kaligiri, Varikuntapadu mandals in Nellore district and Pamuru, Lingasamudram and CS Puram mandals in Prakasam on Saturday.
Villagers ran out of their houses as household articles fell from the shelves and cracks appeared on the walls in several places. The impact of the tremors was more in Prakasam district compared to the neighbouring Nellore. According to NGRI, Hyderabad, the magnitude of the first tremor recorded about 8.45 am was 3.4 on the Richter scale. It was followed by four aftershocks with a magnitude between 1.2 and 2.8. The last tremor at 12.40 pm had a magnitude of 3.4.
Dr Srinagesh Davuluri, Chief Scientist, Head-Seismology Observatory of NIOT said that the frequent tremors in the same region were not a cause for worry. He said he was in touch with district administration. NGRI would be sending a team on Tuesday and Wednesday to study the pattern of tremors. He said NGRI was keeping a close watch on the area and would use advanced technology to obtain online data of the tremors.
