Drought-hit, Telangana to appease rain god

The temple authorities have roped in 30-odd priests for the yagam.

Hyderabad: Despite the Met department predicting bountiful rainfall this monsoon, the TS government is not taking any chances in the wake of two successive droughts and is looking to appease the Rain God!

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has advised all major temples under the endowments department to conduct Varuna Yagam and pray for good rains in view of the drought last year.

Preparations are on at the famed Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Yadadri (Yadagirigutta) in Nalgonda district for a five-day Varuna Yagam to ensure good rains this season.

The temple authorities have roped in 30-odd priests for the yagam. “Varuna yagam is to appease the Rain God and ensure good rains in the state. Temple authorities are organising the five-day programme.

Besides temple priests, priests well-versed with the yagam are conducting it at Ramalingeshwara Swamy temple. Varuna Yagam is Shiva culture hence it is conducted in Shiva temple,” said N. Geetha, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Devasthanam executive officer. She said the yagam is also for world peace.

The yagam began on Saturday morning with Vigneswara Puja and Swasti Vachana. It will be followed by other rituals including rudrabishekham, bilwa archana etc.

In Hindu mythology, Varuna is god of water and the celestial ocean as well as god of law of the underwater world. Sri Raja Rajeswara Swamy temple at Vemulawada in Karimnagar district is also gearing up to conduct Varuna Yagam as are several other temples under the endowments department.

Yagam fever has also gripped ministers after Mr Chandrasekhar Rao’s Ayutha Chandi Maha Yagam at his Erravalli farmhouse recently. Endowments minister A. Indrakaran Reddy is conducting Shata Chandi Yagam at his residence in Nirmal town of Adilabad district. “The Lakshmi Narayana Hrudayata Chandi yagam is for world peace, Bangaru Telangana and good monsoon,” he said.

Varuna Yagam was also conducted at Jogulamba temple at Alampur in Mahbubnagar district which was attended by Niranjan Reddy, deputy chairman of the Planning Board.
