Hyderabad: The city has a population on par with New York but has much lesser crime, Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar on Sunday.
Speaking at the national conference of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Mr Kumar explained how the crime rate has come down after the implementation of technology.
Comparing Hyderabad to New York city, Mr Kumar said, “Hyderabad city has a population of 8.6 million and New York 8.9 million. The number of police stations in both cities is also nearly the same with Hyderabad having 66 and New York, 75. Yet, the crime rate is very less here when compared to New York. Culpable homicides in New York are five times that of Hyderabad, gun shootings are 200 times more than in Hyderabad and crimes against women are 10 times that of Hyderabad.”
Speaking about the use of technology, he narrated a case from New York. “A man died suddenly. When the post mortem results were out, police got to know that he had died due to an overdose of insulin. New York cops unravelled the mystery in a week. The deceased was a diabetic and he had installed an implantable pump. The murderer hacked the implantable pump and gave the command to pump a six month dose into to the body. This caused instant death of the man.”
Explaining the importance of the installation of CCTV cameras which helped police to reduce the crime rate in the city, he said that this initially proved to be very expensive but it helped in the reduction of crime. As a part of the Nenu Saitham program, police encouraged citizens to instal CCTV cameras so that police can have access to these when required.
Mr Kumar said, “The area opposite to Secunderabad station, Regimental Bazaar, used to be difficult to patrol. The station has a daily floating population of 2.5 lakh. There are six police stations surrounding it. It was very difficult to patrol the area because everything is dynamic. In a year there used to be 14-16 murders. After installing 550 cameras with the help of people in the vicinity, the crime figure came down to 65 per cent in three months.”
