Two suspected Maoists killed in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh

A day earlier, eight Maoists were killed in the state.

Hyderabad: In a fresh encounter with security forces, two suspected Maoists were killed in an "exchange of fire" in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Saturday morning. A day earlier, eight Maoists were killed in the state.

Referring to the gun-battle that took place in the forest near Metagudam village in Burkapal area of Sukma district, DIG of Police (south Bastar range) P. Sundarraj said "So far, the bodies of two Naxals, including a woman, have been recovered along with 11 weapons. A search operation following the encounter was still going on".

This morning, when a joint team of the DRG and the STF was cordoning off a forest area near Metagudam located deep inside Burkapal, an exchange of fire broke out between the squad and a group of Maoists present in the area, the DIG said. The exchange of fire lasted for around two hours after which the Maoists escaped in to the thick forest cover. "We suspect a few more Maoists were injured in the gun battle and their colleagues managed to drag them away" he said.

The last two months have resulted in big loss to the Maoists across the country with the "reds" loosing around 60 of its cadre in encounters across the country.

Most of the encounters were reported during the morning hours when the Maoists, according to official's familiar with the anti-Maoist operations, are busy with their daily chores or getting ready for the day.
