HYDERABAD: Scores of motorists driving on West Marredpally main road will get big relief in the next few days. The battered stretch from Katta Maisamma temple to Agra Sweets will be repaired in early February.
The GHMC is addressing the problem of water flowing onto the main road (made of bitumen) from Alladi Pentaiah Nagar which damaged it. The engineering wing is laying an alternate pipeline along the road for which digging has been done at three places.
According to T. Prashanti, GHMC AE, the civic work is most likely to be completed by February 4. Once GHMC completes the job, Secunderabad Cantonment Board officials will take care of the damaged road.
According to SCB engineer B. Balakrishna, they will re-carpet and complete it at one go. “The day GHMC completes the drainage line work, directions will be given to the contractor to finish the road repair. Road work will be done from 10 pm to 5 am as vehicular movement will be low at night. By next morning, the entire stretch will look like new,” he said.
SCB has completed the tender process and finalised the contractor for the road repair.
According to Mr Balakrishna, the main road made of BT got damaged frequently due to water overflow issues. “Hence we focused on a permanent solution this time and requested the GHMC to intervene since Alladi Pentaiah Nagar and adjacent bastis fall under its purview. The civic body had to identify the work, and then put up a proposal, call for tenders and then zero in on a contractor. This process took some time and we had no option but to wait,” he said.
SCB MLA G. Sayanna said he had received a lot of complaints from locals about the bad condition of the road and hence he is personally monitoring the progress of the work.
The sewerage network repair works will take 15 more days for completion. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) took up sewerage repairs near New Club with an estimated cost of '90 lakh.
The 800 metre sewerage pipeline work has been divided into two packages for which the internal road has been dug up.
Locals angry with SCB roads, drains
It’s been a difficult six months for locals and commuters using the West Marredpally main road. While a majority of roads in Secunderabad Cantonment that were damaged due to heavy rainfall last monsoon were repaired, the stretch from Katta Maisamma temple till Agra Sweets in West Marredpally became almost unmotorable in the last few months.
SCB authorities tried to temporarily fix the problem by laying wet mix to make even road as finding a permanent solution was taking time. However, the efforts were futile as water accumulation at various points resulted in potholes all over again, giving commuters a bumpy ride.
Mahatma Rao, an executive member of Suman Housing Colony on the stretch, said that drainage water flowing on to the main road affected their colony also for nearly two years. “To fix the problem, the colony association spent '30,000 to raise the ground level at the colony entrance by some feet,” he said. Suman Colony, a gated community of 95 houses and many families, was facing the brunt of damaged road which residents use on a daily basis. Mr Rao appealed to SCB to repair the road at the earliest.
