Telangana extends ST quota panel term

The government on Saturday extended the term of the Chellappa Commission of Inquiry on ST reservations by one more year, till January 2018.

Hyderabad: The TRS government, in all likelihood, will take more time to implement its promise to increase reservations for Scheduled Tribes from the existing 6 per cent to 12 per cent.

The government on Saturday extended the term of the Chellappa Commission of Inquiry on ST reservations by one more year, till January 2018.

Though the committee had submitted its report last August, the decision to extend its tenure by one more year has raised doubts over the implementation of 12 per cent reservations for STs anytime soon. The 12 per cent quota for STs was among the poll promises made by the TRS during the 2014 elections.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao constituted the panel in March 2015 with a six-month tenure. Since then, it has been given four six-month extensions.

Though the panel’s report submitted in August 2015 was not made public, official sources said the panel recommended below 10 per cent reservations since the ST population in TS is below 10 per cent.
