Chennai: School boy dies in fall from footboard

When the bus took the turn to enter the bus stand, he slipped and fell from the footboard, eyewitnesses have said.

Chennai: A young boy died after falling from an MTC bus on the suburbs on Saturday. Hemachandran, a class 9 boy, who studied in a private school in Chengalpattu was travelling to school when the incident occurred, sources said.

Hemachandran boarded the bus from near his residence in Maraimalai Nagar on Saturday morning to go to school. While the bus was nearing the Chengalpattu new bus stand, Hemachandran was ready to get off and was already on the footboard of the bus, sources said.

When the bus took the turn to enter the bus stand, he slipped and fell from the footboard, eyewitnesses have said. They immediately called the 108 ambulance services who rushed to the spot and took him to the Chengalpattu medical college hospital. Hemachandran had hurt his head severely in the impact and had lost a lot of blood, sources said. However, he died on way to the hospital itself.

The hospital has now taken his body for postmortem. The Chengapattu police are investigating the case, The bus driver and conductor will be inquired. However, no arrests have been made. Passengers who travel on the route say not enough buses are available and therefore students and others have to resort to travelling on the footboard, causing such accidents, they said.
