Cauvery row: Beefed-up security, ban orders keep Bengaluru calm

Bengaluru police mobilised the forces and made heavy police deployment at sensitive areas.

BENGALURU: The city police, who had beefed up security across the city in view of the Supreme Court hearing a petition related to the Cauvery water dispute on Tuesday, further stepped it up in the evening with the apex court giving an adverse verdict.

After the Supreme Court directed the state to release 6,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for three more days, the city police mobilised the forces and made heavy police deployment at sensitive areas.

Security was tight in the north, west and southern parts of Bengaluru, as these parts witnessed violent protests on September 12 following the SC order to release water to the neighbouring state.

The central forces that have camped in the city for the last two weeks were also deployed. Fourteen companies of central units – including the Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police – were stationed at several places in the city. Besides, 15,000 city policemen, 30 platoons of KSRP and CAR policemen, Quick Response Teams and home guards were put on the job to avert any untoward incident.

The police also kept an eye on the developments at sensitive areas through the security cameras. However, no protests were held in any part of the city. Anticipating trouble, Police Commissioner N.S. Megharikh had clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC throughout the day on Tuesday. It is said that prohibitory orders and preventive detention of over 1,000 people helped the police in controlling the situation.

High security at border
The Bengaluru Rural police too had made massive security arrangements at the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border at Attibele. As the situation continues to remain tense at the border for the last two weeks, the police arranged tight security round the clock.

12 arrested
Continuing its probe into September 12 violence, the Kengeri police have arrested 12 members, including eight women, of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike for allegedly pelting stones and abusing staff of Akshaya motors located on Mysuru Road.
