Ulema to lead mass movement against Uniform Civil Code

The Muslim intelligentsia maintained that the proposal was nothing but intervention into the Muslim Personal Law.

Hyderabad: Muslim intelligentsia on Saturday unanimously resolved to launch a nationwide mass movement opposing the Uniform Civil Code proposed by the Centre. Addressing a roundtable meet on the Uniform Civil code, the Muslim intelligentsia maintained that the proposal was nothing but intervention into the Muslim Personal Law. They vowed never to allow this.

Attended by scholars like Syed Akbar Nizamuddin and Mufti Khaleel Ahmed of the Jamia Nizamia and Moulana Ghulam Samdani Ali Quadri, Moulana Syed Abdul Khader Quadri Wahid Pasha, Moulana Hamed Rahmani and Syed Sikander Mashooki, the roundtable meet, organised by the Seerat-un-Nabi Academy resolved to launch the public movement with a massive public meeting in the last week of the September in Hyderabad.

Academy president Ali Pasha said that it was decided to organise similar meetings in every state across the country against the UCC, besides carrying their fight through legal and democratic means. “He said the Constitution give the people the right to follow their own religion and to propagate it. While it is the duty of the Centre to uphold this right, it is the responsibility of religious leaders and scholars to enlighten the people,” Moulana Ali Pasha said.
