Sale of two, four-wheelers zooms in Andhra Pradesh

Youngsters prefer to purchase high-powered vehicles, ignore running costs.

Visakhapatnam: The registration of two-wheelers, four-wheelers and auto-rickshaws in the lead upto the first quarter of the present financial year has soared in various Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Andhra Pradesh.

The Transport Department officials said that a total of 3.1 lakh new vehicles were registered in the state in the first quarter (April to July) of the financial year 2016-17 with a growth of around 15 per cent when compared to the same corresponding period in the last fiscal year 2015-16. AP has sold over 2.6 lakh two-wheelers in just four months in the present fiscal year with growth of 13.82 per cent when compared to the corresponding period in the last fiscal year.

Similarly four-wheeler sales zoomed from 15,485 to 18,854 in the same period. People have purchased 14,393 goods carrying vehicles, 2,779 passenger vehicles and 15,548 auto-rickshaws in the last four months of 2016-17.

Transport Commissi-oner N. Balasubrah-manyam said that with the increased economic activity in Krishna, Vizag and few other districts in the state, purchase of two-wheelers and luxury and high-end four wheelers have been increasing. Besides the economic activity, people in the state have been showing much interest in individual transport rather than public transport that has led to AP registering impressive growth in the sale of vehicles, he added. Indicating the shift from two-wheelers to auto-rickshaws, there is flourishing sales for all kind of vehicles in the last four months as against the same period of last year.

Sources said that the Transport Department has got revenue of Rs 900 crore in the first quarter through vehicle registrations, taxes and few other forms. A transport department official said cashing in on the demand, several luxury and high-end vehicle dealers are opening in the small towns also.
