Hyderabad: Thalassemia patient now a mother

The cost of immunoglobulin was borne by the chief minister's relief fund which sanctioned the cost of the medicines.

Hyderabad: A patient suffering from moderate thalassemia has given birth to a baby girl after successfully completing full term pregnancy at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences. Pregnancy for moderate thalassemia patients is risky as the antibodies after blood transfusion affect the foetus leading to miscarriage.

G.V. Ashwini had two miscarriages and was not able to conceive. When she came to NIMS hospital, the genetic department opted for monitoring her case 24 by 7 whereby the pregnancy after blood transfusion was constantly checked in the ultra sound scans.

Dr K. Nagesh, senior professor of NIMS, said, “After blood transfusion when antibodies developed the doctors used steroids to destroy them. Later they started immunoglobulin and the pregnancy was successfully carried till 37 weeks. The delivery was normal and baby girl is healthy.”

Dr M Shagun and Dr Pragya along with senior rheumatologist Dr N Raj Shekar supervised the pregnancy and its progress.
