Hyderabad: Gandhi hospital gets NHRC notice on 21 deaths

The hospital has four generators on standby but these developed snags and could not be used.

Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Telangana state government on reports of power failure leading to the death of 21 patients at Gandhi Hospital.

The hospital had suffered a power failure for six hours on July 22. The maintenance staff of the hospital was not able to restore power after it tripped at 3 pm. The hospital has four generators on standby but these developed snags and could not be used.

The divisional engineer, Southern Power Distribution Company Limited, confirmed that the power failure in the hospital was due to troubles in its own generating equipment.

The NHRC has asked the principal secretary of Telangana to submit a detailed report within six weeks. It has also asked for steps to be taken to provide relief to the aggrieved families.

“The contents of the news report are painful and raise serious issues of violation of Right to Life of the patients,” the commission said in its notice.
