Hyderabad: Fitful water supply in tail end areas of Metro Water Board

Water Board say that the pipeline network in these areas receives water through gravity and thus the pressure is less at the tail-end.

Hyderabad: Tail-end areas of the Metro Water Board have been receiving inadequate water supply though the board has not reduced the city’s total allotment of 355 million gallons per day. Supply at Osmanpura, Jama Masjid, Purani Haveli, Alijah Kotla, Bibi Bazaar and Sultan Shahi has reduced by 5 MGD while East Anandbagh has not been receiving water since July 12.

Water Board authorities say that the pipeline network in these areas receives water through gravity and thus the pressure is less at the tail-end. They said supply was also less as consumers along the supply lines use electric pumps to draw more water.

Consumer George Jacob Palamootil (CAN 616309026), said, “Water is supplied every fourth day for one hour, but not regularly. Either water is not supplied on the prescribed days or the water flow is feeble. We are not able to collect even 500 litres of water on any supply day.”

Mr Venkateswara Reddy of Bharathnagar, Moosapet, said: “The supply has been insufficient in our colony since May for residents from EWS-570 to 590 and its opposite line. Around 60-70 families are suffering. As and when some residents close their taps, we receive water.”

Water Board maintenance and operations director Rameshwar Rao said, “Residents install electric motors in their houses to draw extra water and to increase the pressure. Unless these motors are seized, consumers will not receive adequate supply.” He said anyone identifying these motors can report to the Water Board and get cash rewards.

Water Board help to legalise water meter

The Water Board, which is on a drive to legalise illegal connections, will issue notices and guide the customers to get meters installed.

Board managing director M. Dana Kishore said meter readers had been directed to serve notices on 3 lakh customers who do not have meters. The notice will include the procedure to get meters installed.

Consumers with unmetered connections will be fined twice the monthly bill. If they do not legalise it even then, it will be disconnected.
