Telangana offices fall short of quota for women

The TS government recently took up a survey in all departments to quantify data on women employees in its service.

Hyderabad: On paper 33 per cent reservations are provided for women in government jobs but the actual representation in various departments Telangana is only 28 per cent in the state.

The TS government recently took up a survey in all departments to quantify data on the women’s workforce. While Hyderabad top-ped the districts, Nizamabad was at the bottom.

The survey assumes significance in the backdrop of the government's plans to increase women’s quota, first introduced in the 1980s in undivided AP, to 50 per cent. Several states have initiated steps to increase the representation of quota for women in government departments.

The department of economics and statistics used to conduct a survey of employees once in five years in undivided AP to analyse employee data and employment pattern. The practice stopped in 2006 and was revived after a decade.

The TS government has asked the finance department to take up a fresh survey to find out the details of employees as accurate data is not available for the last decade, especially as the state has been bifurcated.

The Assam government has recently raised women’s quota to 50 per cent. Bihar has increased women’s quota to 35 per cent in the police department and 50 per cent in teachers’ posts. Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have raised women’s quota from 30 to 33 per cent.
