RTC chief Satyanarayana defends fare hike

The chairman said that the corporation had suffered losses of Rs 701 crore during the year.

Hyderabad: TSRTC chairman S. Satyanarayana has lashed out at opposition parties for taking out protests against the hike in bus fares that came into effect from Monday. Parties are doing this for selfish reasons because no adverse reactions have come from the public, he said.

“In Andhra Pradesh, fares were increased six months ago. Parties that kept mum in Andhra Pradesh are creating a scene here. Even the Congress government enhanced bus fares almost every year,” he pointed out in a press briefing at Bus Bhavan on Monday.

Mr Satyanarayana said the revised fares were less compared to states like Karnataka and Maharashtra. APSRTC increased fares last October, while TSRTC took the decision seven months later, he added.

The chairman said that the corporation had suffered losses of Rs 701 crore during the year because of the 44 per cent of fitment provided to staff. The accumulated losses of the corporation were Rs 2,275 crore and the operational losses during the year were Rs 257 crore.
