Hyderabad: Political leaders of the Telugu states have no option but to welcome the move of the Centre to establish special courts to try cases against MPs and MLAs, even though it may be the last thing they want for their own partymen.
After coming to power, the TD government in AP issued several orders to withdraw cases against 273 persons, including Deputy Chief Ministers K.E. Krishnamurthy and N. Chinarajappa, Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao, Ministers Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, Kollu Ravindra, and Nakka Anand Babu, K. Atchannaidu and Ganta Srinivasa Rao.
TD Vizag (East) MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu said people have been losing faith in politicians. If the court sends criminal politicians to jail, good people will come into politics.
TD MLA from Denduluru in West Godavari, Chinthamaneni Prabhakar saw a silver lining. said, “The move will help politicians who are falsely implicated to be absolved.”
Senior TS BJP MLA G. Kishan Reddy wanted the cases to be speedily disposed of.
The special court must have the power to order an investigation when it felt this was appropriate, he said.
When contacted, MIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi refrained from making any comment.
According to legal experts, the Constitution empowers the Centre to notify or designate a trial court as a special court to try exclusive cases specified before it.
Mr T. Pradyumna Kumar Reddy and Mr Pappu Nageswara Rao, criminal lawyers of the Hyderabad High Court, said that the sessions court was competent to deal with cases against politicians.
Mr Pradyumna Reddy said that a majority of pending cases against politicians are poll related but some of them are facing other criminal cases and economic offences.
