Bus drivers flout safety norms

The Rajadhani bus accident near Siddipet on Saturday raised several questions about safety in RTC buses.

Nizamabad: Violation of safety norms in TSRTC buses lead to fatal road accidents in the state. After the introduction of air conditioned buses like Rajadhani, Garuda, Garuda Plus and Vajra, speed limit of the bus have increased markedly. Stringent deadlines of reaching a destination within a stipulated time coupled with inherent negligence have led to some of the most tragic road accidents in recent times.

The Rajadhani bus accident near Siddipet on Saturday raised several questions about safety in RTC buses. Interestingly, Rajadhani bus services plying between Nizamabad and Secunderabad are a huge success. Within 3 hours, passengers reach their destination. The speeding buses causes stress to onlookers but, the expertise of the drivers has averted many an accident.

Often the driver in an AC bus plays multiple roles-that of a driver, conductor and cleaner. Due to this, the drivers face increased work pressure. Earlier, RTC officials displayed boards in the buses stating that if passengers found any driver using his cell phone while driving, they could complain to either the depot manager or on the complaint cell numbers. But in recent times, the usage of cell phones and earphones are commonplace by drivers in these buses.

Bus passengers worry about their safety in buses. In addition, technical problems also arise in the buses frequently. Passengers are now urging the officials to conduct safety measures meetings for drivers and asking them to refrain from using cell phones while driving.
