Hyderabad: A drunk had the police on tenterhooks for a couple of hours overnight at the Secunderabad railway station when he clambered on to the roof of Platforms 2 and 3 and and threatened to commit suicide by touching the 25,000 KV high tension wires meant for electric trains.
Railway police and staff kept Sunil Kumar, 29, engaged in a conversation for around two hours and rescued him. As it was difficult for bring him down, cops tied him with ropes and lowered him down on the platform.
Sunil Kumar told the police that he was facing problems in his love affair and wanted to commit suicide. Sunil Kumar, a Bhongir native, stays at Marredpally and works as an autorickshaw driver.
He entered the station at about 12.30 am, climbed over the loco pilots building on Platform 1, crawled through the metal beam which holds the high tension cables and reached the roof of platforms 2 & 3.
The night duty staff noticed him trying to reach out the cables and alerted the railway police. Sub inspector B. Pramod Kumar along with his team rushed to the spot and started a conversation with Sunil Kumar.
Mr Pramod Kumar said that for around one-and-a-half hours, they could not understand what he was saying. They could communicate only when he began speaking in Telugu. While he was on the roof, the cops stood on the platform and tried to distract him.
“Whenever we asked him to come down, he stretched his hands to the cables. As I was in plain clothes, he thought I was a passenger. To avoid him being scared at the sight of the cops, we asked our men in uniform to wait under the roof, while others kept him engaged in conversation.” said Mr Pramod Kumar said.
At about 2.30 am, Sunil Kumar agreed to come down and asked Mr Pramod Kumar for help. He climbed on to the roof using a latter, and Sunil Kumar started talking to him. The policeman grabbed Sunil Kumar by the waist, and four railway employees also joined him.
They then tied Sunil Kumar with ropes and lowered him to the platform. “He was counselled till the morning and handed him over to his sister and brother-in-law,” Mr Pramod Kumar said.
