Chennai: Water level in major reservoirs in South India under the monitoring of Central Water Commission has dipped to 10 per cent of their total storage capacity.
“There are 31 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 51.59 BCM. The total live storage available in these reservoirs is 5.21 BCM, which is 10 per cent of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs,” the Union water resources ministry said.
It said the storage during corresponding period of last year was 27 per cent and average storage of last 10 years during corresponding period was 20 per cent of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.
Storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last 10 years during the corresponding period, it said. Southern region comprises Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala.
