Kadavanthra: Students lodge 45 plaints with cops

The first-ever students' complaint adalat was held at Kadavanthra police station, declared a child-friendly one in November.

Kochi: Many of them are seeing a police station from close quarters for the first time and appeared to have had a changed perspective of cops while coming out.
The first-ever students’ complaint adalat was held at Kadavanthra police station, declared a child-friendly one in November, on Tuesday in which over 45 complaints were received. “Many complaints on primary analysis have the potential for registering as cases and deals with serious issues like drugs peddling,” said M.P. Dinesh, the city police commissioner.

“In fact, we’ve registered a few cases and sent the same to the local police station for investigation on priority. Now such adalats will be held on a frequent basis, the next one at the North Police Station.” Assistant commissioner K. Laljy said students from all schools across the city were informed of the adalat. They can directly approach the station without considering the station limits. “Such complaints, if found genuine, will be dealt with on priority,” said. The complaints were received under four heads – rug usage and sales, domestic issues, transport issues and common complaints.

“I and my friends used to face lewd comments from antisocial elements while returning from school. We’ve given the same in writing so that other children in the area can walk without fear,” said Hima, a Class VIII student from West Kochi.
While a parent complained about difficulty faced by girl students during festivities such as Holi when they will be poured with coloured water and rubbed with colours without their permission, a physical education teacher from Mattancherry wanted cops to act against the drug mafia supplying ganja and other narcotics to students.

T.R. Rajesh, assistant commissioner, District Crimes Record Bureau, said the Kochi police has also prepared a list of “children having a conflict with law” and would attempt to correct them under the project ‘Kaval’. “We’ll also soon roll out Saranabalyam project, under which children used for begging will be rescued and given accommodation and education,” he said.
