Pulses steady, chana dal costly in Hyderabad

Mr Ramesh Kumar, a trader from Usmangunj market, attributed the rise in chana dal prices to Ramzan.

Hyderabad: The prices of pulses are stable at the wholesale markets but retailers and supermarkets are charging more.

Traders at two of the biggest markets in the city for pulses — Mahbub Mansion market in Malakpet and Usmangunj market near Begum Bazaar — said only chana dal turned costlier in the last three months.

Sunil Kumar Agarwal of Sri Jagadamba Sales at the Mahbub Mansion market said the price of chana dal had risen from Rs 65 per kg last month to Rs 86 in the wholesale market.

“The cost of the remaining dals like red gram, green gram and black gram are stable at Rs 136, Rs 95 and Rs 175,” he said. But red gram is selling between Rs 150 and Rs 175, followed by green gram at Rs 100 to Rs 115 and black gram Rs 180 to Rs 200 a kg.

Mr Ramesh Kumar, a trader from Usmangunj market, attributed the rise in chana dal prices to Ramzan. “Chana dal is used in various recipes during Ramzan including haleem, hareez and bajjis. Due to the shortage of the dal and flour, the price has risen,” he said.

Mr Kailash Nath, a retail store owner from Amberpet, said traders were charging more for transport from the wholesale markets, shop rents, power bills, labour charges and profit.

“We have a Rs 1 or Rs 2 of profit per kg. In super markets, another Rs 10 is added for AC charges, staff salaries and wastage,” Mr Kamal Nath explained.
