Telangana government wanted horticulture, tribal universities

Centre sanctions national institutions in AP, but provided less funds.

Hyderabad: After four years of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, several bifurcation issues and assurances given to the Telugu states are still pending.

The Telangana state government is demanding that the Centre declare the prestigious Kaleshwaram irrigation project as a national project and provide funds. The Centre has not taken any decision on the issue.

The main issues relating to Telangana state are - establishment of horticulture and tribal universities, the integrated steel plant at Bayyaram in Khammam district, setting up of a 4,000-MW power plant by NTPC, improvement of road connectivity in the backward regions, establishment of a rail coach factory. AP, apart from the Special Category Status, is still waiting for an integrated steel factory in Kadapa district, a separate railway zone, a Central university and a tribal university, a major port at Duggiraju-patnam in Nellore district, Metro Rail projects at Vijayawada and Vizag apart from others.

The Centre has sanctioned national level institutions in AP as assured in the Act but few funds have been provided. In addition to denying special status, the Centre has also decided against proceeding with the port at Duggiraju-patnam and Metro Rail projects at Vijayawada and Vizag dubbing them as unviable. The Centre has not given permission to establish an Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Indian Institute of Packaging, NID, National Institute of Ocean Technology, Mega leather park and others in AP

As regards the division of assets and liabilities of the 9th and 10th Schedule institutions, the Act states that if the two state governments fail to agree the Centre should intervene.
