TTV Dhinakaran's arrest major step in cleansing Tamil Nadu politics: BJP

They wanted to buy votes, symbol, polls, says Tamilisai.

CHENNAI: The arrest of AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran by the Delhi Police in the Election Commission bribery case, is a major step towards ‘cleansing’ the politics in Tamil Nadu and making it corrupt-free, BJP State chief Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan has claimed. Stating that Dhinakaran has been arrested based on evidences against him, she said this (arrest) should put a full stop to such corrupt activities, particularly in the electoral process.

“Law has taken its course… Dhinakaran has insulted Tamil Nadu by attempting to bribe the Election Commission,” she said on Wednesday. Dhinakaran was arrested on Tuesday night after four days of questioning for allegedly attempting to bribe an unidentified Election Commission official to get the undivided AIADMK’s Two leaves election symbol for his faction. Police had said that Sukesh had struck a deal for '50 crore to help the AIADMK faction to regain the party symbol that was frozen by the EC.

Speaking to reporters here Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan hailed the arrest and said “they wanted to buy votes, party symbol and even the victory (in R. K. Nagar Assembly Constituency). This should put a full stop to such corrupt activities, particularly in the electoral process. They are evidences for what they have done. And based on that evidence he has been arrested. We welcome the move.” The BJP’s objective is to cleanse the politics and the arrest was a step in that direction, Dr Tamilisai said and added that Tamil Nadu needed a corruption-free, transparent government. “Even the DMK do not offer an alternative because of the 2G scam,” she said.

She lashed out at the DMK and left parties for using the shutdown on Tuesday as a launch pad to forge future electoral ties and said these parties had no real concern for the farmers. Terming them as “opportunists” Dr Tamilisai alleged that DMK working president M. K. Stalin had “utilised the shutdown to strengthen his political base and also identify his probable allies for the polls in future. The Communists in Tamil Nadu, who could not condemn the Kerala government for attempting to build a check dam across the Siruvani, had participated in the bandh as they were “desperate for electoral ties,” she alleged.
