Hyderabad: Students get picky on firms

Students search out the background information of the visiting firms, and select firms they would like to join.

Hyderabad: Students from government engineering colleges and leading private institutions are selectively queuing up for recruitment drives of companies coming in for campus placements. Before companies come and do their tests, students search out the background information of the visiting firms, and select firms they would like to join.

According to CBIT principal Prof. B. Chenakeshava Rao, students are checking the package details as well as the recruiting company’s profile before taking a call to either attend or skip the tests. “Meritorious students in top colleges have confidence that they will get placements with one company or the other by the end of the final year. Hence they focus on companies that interest them,” he said.

Prof. G.V.K. Reddy of Vardhman Engineering College said students are not showing any interest in firms in far-off cities. “For example, if a firm from Coimbatore or Pune is coming for campus interviews, less than 70 per cent of the students are registering for the tests. However, if a top company or a Hyderabad- based firm comes in, student registrations are on the higher side,” he said. With students adopting a pick-and-choose approach, college managements are finding it difficult to mobilise enough of students for the recruitment drives.
