Sense of cynicism creeping in, Sanjay Kishan Kaul warns

Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that society has been facing a scenario where there is a sense of cynicism.

Chennai: The Madras High court, Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that society has been facing a scenario where there is a sense of cynicism. After hoisting the tri-colour during Republic Day celebration in the Madras High court premises, the CJ said, “Cynicism is there towards every authority, possibly because the aspirations of the people are large. But then this cynicism must give way to a sense of pride. Without pride in our achievement, the progress will be slower. It is easy to criticise sometimes, but it is difficult to construct something.”

Often the judiciary finds itself in a different situation as compared to the views of the populace. That is so because in some sense inherently the judiciary may be anti-majoritarian in its context, because it has to take difficult decisions to protect all different opinions and not the only opinion of the majority.” He appealed to the citizens to look to the future with aspirations with endeavour to work, but at the same time take pride in what we have achieved. Then only will progress be better and would get down to the lowest in the system. His remarks gain significance following week-long mass protests by students and youth on the Marina Beach and across Tamil Nadu demanding the conduct of jalikattu.
