No more power cuts? KPTCL launches major upgradation

66 kv stations to be upgraded to 220 kv in HSR, K.R. Puram, Peenya and Kumbalgodu.

Bengaluru: Some parts of the city might soon get uninterrupted power supply without load sheddings or frequent power cuts with the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) beginning work on upgradation of sub-stations, which is expected to be completed by December.

The work is already in progress near the National Games Village in Koramangala, near ITI in K.R. Puram, in Kombalgodu and near Brindavan Alloys in Peenya. After the completion of the project, these 66/11 kv stations will be upgraded to 220/11 kv stations. Except for Peenya, all other stations will be set up by December, while the station near Brindavan Alloy will be completed by March.

A senior KPTCL officer told Deccan Chronicle, “Already, the work to lay new power lines has begun and is on in full swing. The upgradation will help in supplying constant, uninterrupted power to the city. Once the upgraded stations are operational, there will be no power interruptions or load shedding. Now many areas experience frequent power cuts because of various technical reasons, like in Koramangala and surrounding areas that draw power from the HSR station. While power being supplied, a snag might develop because of the heavy load. Likewise, the station near ITI draws power from Hoodi sub-station. There is a heavy load on Hoodi, HSR Layout, Somanahalli and Nelamanagala stations. At times, the load cannot be handled, leading to power cuts.”

He said, “There was a need to upgrade the stations as the city’s power demand was increasing because of rapid commercialisation, expansion of the city limits and growing population.”

Asked why KPTCL could not set up new stations instead of upgrading them, another KPTCL officer said that there is no space either in the city or on the outskirts for new stations. Even if the space was available, the new stations would have been more expensive.
