Tiruchy: The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) has prepared a block level atlas (hydro-geo-morphological maps) which shows very promising areas for construction of rainwater harvesting structures and water availability areas for drilling of bore-wells, according to the managing director of TWAD C.N. Maheswaran.

He told newsmen here on the sidelines of a review meeting with the Tiruchy collector S.Sivarasu, officials of TWAD board and of local bodies of Tiruchy, Perambaalur, Ariyalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruarur and Nagapattinam districts, at Tiruchy on Tuesday, to review the present drinking water crisis, said they were making arrangements for the establishment of 12,800 rainwater harvest structures (RWHS) across the state besides creating awareness among the people about them.

He said they have taken up strong weakness opportunity Threat (SWOT) analysis for the last 15 days on all the 556 comprehensive Water supply schemes (CWSS) all over Tamil Nadu except, Chennai, for timely delivery, assured quality and defined quality of water.

Consequently, the officials of the TWAD scientifically explored the strength and weakness of the water distribution system, such as sustainability of the water in the storage reservoirs, sources augmentation works, creation of flow diversion channels and other possible ways and means to improve the service delivery in overhead tanks, pumping mains and pumping stations, he added.

He said TWAD was providing safe, potable and equitable drinking water to 4.23 crore people of Tamil Nadu except for Chennai with the present supply of 1,816 MLD against the designed availability of 2,146 MLD of water, covering eight corporations, 67 municipalities, 347 town panchayats, and 48,948 rural habitations.

He said TWAD would rejuvenate water supply schemes that are 25-30 years old in Tiruchy, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur and Pudukkottai districts at an estimated cost of Rs 13.5 crore. During the current year they plan to spend Rs 36 crore for rejuvenating 173 schemes across the state.
