Telangana: Date of birth on Aadhaar to be considered

Mr Rao was speaking at a review meeting with ministers and officials to finalise the modalities for implementing the scheme.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday announced the launch of the Rs 5 lakh free insurance scheme for farmers, from August 15, the first of its kind in the country like the Rythu Bandhu Scheme.

The date of birth mentioned on the Aadhaar card will be considered. Mr Rao said that even though the premium amount would be lesser for accident insurance, the government had decided to go for the life insurance despite the cost. The idea was to come to the rescue of the bereaved family.

The Chief Minister told LIC officials that in view of the large number of people and huge premium as well as the insured amount, the corporation should take it as a prestigious scheme and a challenge.

Mr Rao was speaking at a review meeting with ministers and officials to finalise the modalities for implementing the scheme. “Small and marginal farmers account for 93 per cent. There are 18 lakh farmers whose holdings are less than one acre. Their livelihood is agriculture and farming and for any reason when the farmer dies his family will have to face lot of hardships,” he said.

“In view of this we have decided to provide Rs 5 lakh insurance coverage to the farmer. This would be to ensure proper support to the bereaved family. This is another step forward by the government,” Mr Rao said.
