Kottayam: Girl with transplanted organs dies

Severe infection in the brain and other internal organs led to her death.

Kottayam: Ambili Fathima, 22, a college student who had undergone a rare multiple organ transplant surgery in Apollo Hospital, Chennai, ten months ago, died at the Caritas Hospital here on Monday.

The only child of Basheer Hassan and Shyla of Puthuparampil, Anakkal near Kanjirappally, she was born with congenital heart disease and was suffering from pulmonary hypertension. Severe infection in the brain and other internal organs led to her death.

She had also undergone another surgery a month after the transplant as after her internal organs were infected, though heavy dose medicines had suppressed it earlier.

Ms Fathima and her family came to their rented house near the Caritas for treatment a month back and was undergoing treatment for the infection in blood and internal organs for the past three days. She was shifted to the ICU after her condition turned critical.
