Milk in Hyderabad safe, says civic body

Food Lab says samples have to be collected in places where milk is likely to be adulterated, based on intelligence.

Hyderabad: If the findings of the GHMC food controllers are to be believed, milk sold in Hyderabad is safe.

GHMC assistant food controller K. Balaji Raju said that the corporation had tested 43 samples of milk and found there were no residues of chemicals or urea. “We found that only three samples had the difference in MSNF (milk solids not fat). MSNF is related to lactose and caseins. The MSNF difference will not impact health,” he said.

An official said the GHMC had taken samples from all brands of milk sold in the city. “We covered free samples too,” he said.

The GHMC wants to do another round of testing particularly in the Secunderabad railway station area where milk is sold without packaging. “As per our information there is no synthetic milk adulteration in city. Last year we found milk in damaged tetra pack containing chemicals,” he said.

Asked about the finding, an official at the TS Food Lab at Nacharam said samples have to be collected in places where milk is likely to be adulterated, based on intelligence.

“We tested the samples lifted by the food inspectors. We say that all the milk sold in the city is safe. In three samples MSNF was 8.2 instead of 8.5. Last year we had two to three samples that contained urea out of 400 samples. In free samples, we found neutralisers and maltodextrine in 2015,” he said.
