25,000 cops to man Republic Day fest in Chennai

17 superintendents of police and four additional director-generals of police from other units across the state, will be on duty in the city.

Chennai: As many as 25,000 police personnel, including 14 inspectors general of police, 17 superintendents of police and four additional director-generals of police from other units across the state, will be on duty in the city on Thursday to supervise the security arrangements for the Republic Day celebrations.

Vehicles are being diverted at various points in and around Kamarajar Salai since Monday, the day the jallikattu protest ended in large-scale violence. In traffic changes on R Day, the stretch of Kamarajar Salai from Lighthouse up to War Memorial will be closed for all the vehicles from 6 to 10 am.

All commercial vehicles coming from Adyar and intend to proceed towards Broadway on Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at Greenways point towards R K Mutt Road, Luz junction, Luz Church Road, Karpagambal Nagar, Sivasamy Salai, Royapettah High Road, Royapettah Tower Clock, Whites Road, Smith Road, Anna Salai to reach Broadway.

Other vehicles including MTC buses coming from Adyar and intend to proceed towards Broadway on Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at Santhome High Road and Kutchery Road junction. MTC bus route no 21-G coming from Luz junction proceeding towards Gandhi statue will be diverted via Nilgiris Junction- Whites Road, Smith Road, Anna Salai and to reach Broadway.

Similarly, MTC bus route no 12 G and 45 B will be diverted via Music Academy, government Royapettah hospital, Whites Road, Anna Salai, Wallajah Road and reach Anna Square.
