Garbage accumulates at Jalpally, raises concerns

Earlier the Jalpally Tank Road led to the village where garbage was collected from the colonies and disposed off on a daily basis.

Hyderabad: Colonies in Jalpally Municipality in the south-end of the city are now littered with rising garbage mounds raising apprehensions of them becoming health hazards soon.

Earlier the Jalpally Tank Road led to the village where garbage was collected from the colonies and disposed off on a daily basis. But ever since the access road has been closed off, the garbage that is being dumped by the residents is not getting cleared.

“Two weeks have passed and the garbage is stinking. On many instances, we have set garbage dumps on fire after pouring kerosene,” said Mr.. Karim Ansari a local resident of Jalpally. The situation is deplorable in a few colonies where open plots have turned into garbage dumps. Mr Abdullah Raheem, who stays in the VIP School Lane complained that a couple of thousand children spend close to six hours in the school.

“The callous municipality officials have not bothered to make alternative arrangements. Whenever we complain they ask us to identify a place where they can dispose off the garbage”, Mr Raheem said.

Another resident, Ms Salma Begum, said that people were falling ill due to unhygienic conditions prevailing in the neighbourhood. “There is a scare of seasonal ailments sparking off in the cluster of colonies in Jalpally Municipality. Still the officials are not initiating any action”, she said.

When contacted, Commissioner of Jalpally Municipality, Mr Saber Ali admitted that they were not lifting the garbage as there was no place to dispose it.

“We have been approaching the GHMC authorities to lift the garbage on a daily basis. Actually, we do not have any dump yard so we had made an open land beyond human habitation to dispose garbage collected from colonies. Now as the approach is closed we are mulling over the idea of seeking GHMC help”, he said.
