Women can enter Haji Ali sanctum; trust seeks month's time

Senior counsel, appearing for trust, told the court that in a month's time women will be allowed till its inner sanctum sanctorum.

New Delhi: In a victory for women’s rights, Mumbai’s Haji Ali Dargah Trust on Monday informed the Supreme Court that it will allow entry of women inside the inner sanctum sanctorum on par with men.

Taking note of a resolution passed to this effect by the trust, a three-judge bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur and Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and L. Nageswara Rao disposed of an appeal filed by the trust against a Bombay High Court order directing entry of women inside the sanctum sanctorum.

Senior counsel Gopal Subramanium, appearing for the trust, told the court that in a month’s time women will be allowed till its inner sanctum sanctorum.

He said, “We have already passed a resolution on October 11 to this effect and need two weeks’ time to implement it. Some flooring has to be done and we also need to remove some obstructions like wooden windows and treasury boxes.”

Protect women, axe triple talaq: Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday supported equal rights for women in the Muslim community and said he favoured discontinuation of triple talaq. He was addressing a Maha Parivartan Rally in Mahoba district in the Bundelkhand region on Monday when he said one should not consider religion when it comes to treating mothers and sisters with respect.

The PM called upon TV news channels to not turn triple talaq into an issue of Hindu versus Muslim or BJP versus other parties, Mr Modi said that in a submission to the Supreme Court, the Central government had clearly stated that there should not be any atrocity on women and there should be no discrimination.
