Dengue probe to zero in on care

The audit is being done on eight guidelines.

Khammam: A five-member team, which is collecting details of the 17 dengue deaths in Bonakal mandal, will be undertaking a systematic audit into the treatment and exploitation of the deceased by registered medical practitioners and private hospitals. The audit is being done on eight guidelines – whether Eliza tests were conducted or not, system of treatment in private hospitals, medicine lists, platelet issue, whether the patient was old, had any other ailments etc.

“The government is serious about the deaths and treatment by quacks. It is committed to check this type of treatment in rural areas,” said a member of the team. It was found that an RMP in Bonakal had administered high dose steroids to dengue patients Maridu Venkataravamma, Janakamma and Nagaraju, who later died in a private hospital. Likewise, a homeopathy doctor, who had treated dengue patients in Bonakal mandal, had also administered high dosage of steroids.

The team, comprising Mr N. Kondal Rao, DMHO, Mr Madhava Rao, retired DMHO, Mr Kotiratnam, Integrated Disease Surveillance Officer, Ms Malathi, district senior public health officer and Mr Rambabu, district malaria officer, was asked to collect details in a systematic manner. The team has decided to approach a senior physician and take his opinion regarding treatment in the cases after collecting all the details. Meanwhile another 25 dengue cases were registered in Bonakal mandal on Monday and the patients’ treatment is going on. Interestingly, viral fever cases have come down drastically in the mandal.
