Telangana: Creation of new districts compounds financial problem

The new districts depend entirely on the state government to purchase even office furniture and stationery.

Hyderabad: Formation of new districts has further compounded the financial woes of the state government. The existing nine districts, which are already facing a financial crisis, are not in a position to disburse funds to the 17 new districts which are being carved out from the old ones.

The new districts depend entirely on the state government to purchase even office furniture and stationery. Requisition letters for grant of funds to purchase furniture, computers, stationery and to take private buildings on lease/ rent to accommodate offices and officers are pouring in at the Secretariat.

Though the government had recently released Rs 1 crore each to the new districts to make arrangements to start operations from Dasara, officials say that this is no way sufficient to meet the expenditure.

The treasuries department in the existing districts have frozen all payments due to their reorganisation. Also, bills pending with old districts are being transferred to the new districts on the pretext of jurisdiction.
