Rains drive people out of homes in Warangal

With houses damaged, property lost and no food to eat, residents of many slum colonies are in deep trouble.

Warangal: Heavy rains have left the denizens of many colonies in the city homeless and distraught. Though the intensity of the rain reduced on Saturday, the rain and floods have thrown many families in low-lying slum areas out of their homes, and onto the roads.

With houses damaged, property lost and no food to eat, residents of many slum colonies are in deep trouble. Weather forecast suggests heavy rain will continued for five more days.

In Sammaiahnagar Colony, right beside the Waddepalli tank, many areas were inundated and houses flooded. The residents were shifted by the authorities to rehabilitation centres where they were provided night shelter.

Floodwater entered many houses damaging electronic goods, food items and clothes. Most of the families residing in these colonies are daily wage workers. Due to the heavy rains, a compound wall collapsed on colony resident Manupati Sammakka. Luckily, she received only a minor injury on her leg.

“More than a quintal of rice got wet and turned waste as water entered my house. The TV, fridge and cooler were damaged badly. We are daily wage workers. We find it hard even to pay the house rent. It is hard to cope with this lose,” she said.

Similar situations were witnessed in almost all the houses in the colony. The houses were damp and the mud in front of the houses and on the roads were washed away. The residents didn’t even have drinking water as the municipal tap water was completely muddy.

“My house got completely inundated, and all our belongings were damaged. All the grains, the food items and utensils were washed away,” said resident P. Rajeshwari.

In Amaravatinagar colony, the floodwater was still flowing on the roads. Some roads were washed away and many were damaged.

Many houses were damaged and the rainwater entered the ground floor of many houses, and all the possessions thereof were washed away. The situation in Shakarasikunta, Karimbad, Pragathinagar, Ursu Gutta, Kashibugga, Kothawada and other low-lying areas was also miserable.
