By Jan 2017, will meet all TN demands, Karnataka CM tells Narendra Modi

Bengaluru: A day after getting the state legislature to pass a unanimous resolution directing the government to utilise Cauvery water only for drinking water in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shot off a letter to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on Saturday night informing him of the state government's intention to seek modification of the September 20 order of the Supreme Court.

" In the light of the resolution, the government decided to move application for modification of the interim order permitting Karnataka to account water (of 6000 cusecs) before the end of the season in January 2017, instead of accounting on September 27, as mentioned in the interim order. My government has no intention to disregard any of the orders of the Supreme Court. This is for your kind information,” Mr Siddaramaiah wrote, while explaining the details of the September 20 order of the Supreme Court.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that BJP Ministers at the centre, Ananth Kumar and D.V.Sadananda Gowda had quietly appealed to the Union ministry of Water Resources for a resolution.

Asked why the government sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had not helped Karnataka all along, water resources minister M.B. Patil told Deccan Chronicle, "We are facing the situation of a constitutional crisis. Therefore, we have to keep the Prime Minister informed.”

“Perhaps, the Centre may inform the Supreme Court that it would intervene to resolve the crisis. In anticipation of that, we made a request to Prime Minister.”
The state legislature had on Sept. 23, adopted a resolution directing the government to utilise Cauvery water for drinking water purposes only.
