Minister seeks to speed up post-flood relief activities

Emergency financial aid of Rs 10,000 will be distributed to all eligible families by September 7, the minister said.

Kochi: A review meeting convened by minister C. Raveendranath here on Saturday has decided to expedite post-flood rehabilitation and rebuilding activities in the district.

Emergency financial aid of Rs 10,000 will be distributed to all eligible families by September 7, the minister said.

While selecting the flood-affected, there should not be discrimination between those who moved to relief camps and those who stayed back in their homes, during heavy rains and flood, he said.

A team of revenue and panchayat officials will be deputed to inspect and take stock of the fully and partially damaged houses. The team will visit every household to collect the data. The minister also asked the officials to chalk out an action plan to prevent flooding in vulnerable areas in coming years.

“Poor drainage has created issues in many places and with the recurring floods, the areas are now known to those who are connected with the sector. Officials and people’s representatives have to take the lead in implementing projects to prevent flooding. Activities to prevent water logging should be launched after Onam,” the minister instructed.

District collector S. Suhas, John Fernandez MLA and government officials attended.
