Rajahmundry: Polavaram project-affected people alleged that the presence of muck was polluting drinking water in wells and causing several health problems affecting lungs, kidneys and allergy.
Based on direction from the National Green Tribunal, a three-member joint committee including Dr Madhu from Central Pollution Control Board, Bengaluru, Dr C. Palapandi, chief senior scientist, MoEF, Chennai and West Godavri district collector Revu Muthyalaraju inspected the Polavaram project at Polavaram in West Godavari on Wednesday.
Affected villagers identified as Fatima Unnisa, Jagan Mohan Rao, K. Rama Chandra Rao and others submitted representations to the team members. They complained to the team members stating that the presence of dumping yard was resulting in pollution of ground water tables as the water from the drinking water well got polluted and was not fit for consumption.
The committee members inspected the Mula Lanka area where the dumping yard was located and checked the wells in the houses.
Mr Revu Muthyalaraju said that the water samples from the wells would be collected to be sent for analysis.
