Shaky Varthur bridge to be fixed soon

A couple of days ago, the commuters observed that bridge was shaking when vehicles passed over it.

Bengaluru: Heavy vehicles are barred from using Varthur bridge in Whitefield till the dilapidated structure is completely renovated. A couple of days ago, the commuters observed that bridge was shaking when vehicles passed over it.

They informed the off MLA Arvind Limbavalli who along with the engineers visited the site and called for a detailed report after the proper examination of the bridge. Mr Limbavalli has also directed the engineers to take up the asphalting work.

The jurisdictional DCP and ACP traffic have been informed about the renovation plan and they would be coming up with alternate route for the motorists.
"I would assure that prompt action would be taken in consultation with the engineers. Users of this bridge and general public are requested to cooperate till the renovation work is undertaken by agencies concerned," the MLA stated in his Facebook post.

However, the BBMP engineers have said that vehicles weighing up to 10 tonnes can use the bridge and they aim to carry out the repair works within 15 days before the onset of monsoon. "The repair works will be carried during night as there is heavy traffic movement during the day. Within a couple of days, the engineers will file a report and in the next 15 days, the repair works will be carried out. A private firm has been asked to test the bridge," said a BBMP engineer associated with Mahadevapura zone.

Based on the meeting of members of Whitefield Rising with BBMP engineers, it has been established that the BBMP has agreed for a periodical assessment of the bridge, and Palike will issue a press statement on the steps taken. The bridge was built in 2001 and BBMP is its custodian.
